GridCraft MCP: a spreadsheet your agent can drive

Every ribbon button, menu item and dialog in GridCraft is a command, and the same commands are open to programs. The gridcraft-cli command-line tool serves them as an MCP server, so an AI agent can open a workbook, write values and formulas, format a range, add a chart and save, with the same engine the app uses.

MCP needs gridcraft-cli on your computer. The browser spreadsheet on this site can’t be driven by an agent; for formulas and questions about a workbook in the browser, use the Spreadsheet AI panel.

Get the CLI

The 0.5.0 release ships gridcraft-cli for macOS (gridcraft-cli-0.5.0-macos-universal.zip, signed and notarized). On other systems, build it from the source code with Rust: cargo install --path apps/gridcraft-cli in a clone of the repository.

Set up with Claude Code

For a headless workbook session (no window):

claude mcp add gridcraft -- gridcraft-cli mcp

Or add it to your agent’s MCP configuration (.mcp.json in a project for Claude Code):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "gridcraft": {
      "command": "gridcraft-cli",
      "args": ["mcp"]
    }
  }
}

Use ["mcp", "--in", "/path/book.xlsx"] to start with a file open, or ["mcp", "--sample", "budget"] for one of the samples.

Drive the desktop app you are looking at

Start the desktop app with its control channel, then point the MCP server at it:

gridcraft --control 7979
claude mcp add gridcraft-app -- gridcraft-cli mcp --connect 7979

In this mode the agent works in the open window, and it can also take screenshots of it.

What the agent gets

The server also offers the open workbook, the command list and the function list as read-only resources. Results are JSON text, and a failed call says why in plain words.

Prompts to try

Without MCP: the CLI on its own

gridcraft-cli info book.xlsx # sheets, used ranges, tables, charts, names
gridcraft-cli cat book.xlsx --range A1:F20 # aligned table of displayed values
gridcraft-cli eval '=PMT(5%/12,360,-300000)'           # evaluate a formula
gridcraft-cli convert book.xlsx data.csv --sheet Sales # .xlsx, .csv, .tsv, .json or .html by extension
gridcraft-cli run --in book.xlsx --cmd 'home.bold={"range":"A1:C1"}' --out book.xlsx
gridcraft-cli commands --search chart # every command and its parameters

FAQ

Can an AI agent control the browser version on this site?

No. The web build has no control channel, and the MCP server is part of gridcraft-cli, which runs on your computer. For formula help and questions about a workbook in the browser, use the Spreadsheet AI panel; for agent automation, use the CLI or the desktop app.

Which agents work with it?

Any MCP client that can launch a local stdio server: Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code agents and others. They all take the same command and arguments.

Does it open a network port?

The headless server doesn’t: it talks over stdin and stdout and stops when the agent disconnects. Driving the desktop app needs its control channel, which you turn on with --control and which listens on 127.0.0.1 only.

Can the agent read or write any file on my disk?

It can reach whatever paths it passes to open_workbook and save_workbook; the server has no option to confine it to one folder. Run the agent in a working folder you are comfortable with, and review what it saves.
